Self-exclusion registers in 2026: BetStop passes 65,000 as GAMSTOP sets records

Australia's BetStop register had 65,430 registrations and 40,160 active exclusions by 30 June 2026, and on 15 September 2026 the operator Dabble paid a AUD 1,069,200 penalty over BetStop breaches. Other national registers are growing too. GAMSTOP recorded its busiest month ever in May 2026, and Sweden added a 10-day Spelpaus option. Ireland's register is written into law but is not yet running.

A national self-exclusion register lets a person block themselves from every licensed operator in a market with one request. The registers differ in which products they cover, how long an exclusion lasts and how hard it is to reverse. Below are the latest verified figures and changes for each market.

Australia: BetStop at three years, with enforcement

BetStop launched on 21 August 2023. By 30 September 2025 it had 49,382 registrations and 31,838 active exclusions. By 30 June 2026 the figures were 65,430 and 40,160. It covers all licensed online and phone wagering providers in Australia. More on the local market is on our Australia hub.

The Dabble case shows how enforcement works. ACMA found the operator failed to close 157 accounts after their holders registered with BetStop. It also sent 839 marketing messages to 165 self-excluded people. Dabble paid AUD 1,069,200 and entered a two-year court-enforceable undertaking.

Exclusions last from three months to life. They can be extended but not shortened. To leave after the minimum period, a person must make a statutory declaration confirming they have received counselling or advice, and removal happens 7 days after the application. In ACMA research published in November 2025, 81 percent of registrants said they had stopped betting and 15 percent said they had cut back. The reform law passed on 19 August 2026 adds a 90-day restriction on inducements for people leaving BetStop.

UK: GAMSTOP keeps setting records

GAMSTOP reported a 19 percent rise in registrations in the first half of 2025, and nearly 600,000 registrations since it launched in April 2018. In the first half of 2026, registrations were up 16 percent year on year. May 2026 was its busiest month on record, with 12,236 sign-ups. Registrations from under-25s rose 26 percent and made up almost one in three self-exclusions.

You can choose 6 months, 1 year, 5 years, or 5 years with auto-renewal. GAMSTOP says an exclusion stays active for 7 years after it expires unless you contact it to remove it. In August 2026 the Gambling Commission warned that operators registering customers under a middle name instead of a forename can cause mismatches with GAMSTOP.

Self-exclusion is easy to start but deliberate to reverse: pausing is instant and free, while returning requires waiting out the full period, a cooling-off
Joining a register is free and quick. Leaving usually means waiting out the chosen period and, in several markets, an extra removal step. Rules differ: CRUKS ends on its own, and BetStop allows early removal after three months.

Sweden: a record year and a new 10-day option

Spelinspektionen's 2025 annual report showed a record 134,484 people self-excluded through Spelpaus at the end of 2025, up from 120,607 a year earlier. In June 2026 Spelpaus added a 10-day option alongside 1, 3 and 6 months and an indefinite exclusion with a 12-month minimum. As before, no exclusion can be ended early. From 1 August 2026, each operator has to use its own credentials to check the register.

Denmark, the Netherlands and Germany

Denmark's ROFUS passed 60,000 registrants in June 2025. It covers licensed online gambling, land-based casinos and betting shops. It offers temporary and permanent exclusions; the ROFUS site sets out the current periods.

The Dutch register, CRUKS, passed 100,000 registrations on 24 July 2025. A gokstop lasts at least six months and ends automatically at the end of the chosen period. It can only be cancelled after the first six months, with an 8-day cooling-off. Family members and others can apply to register someone, and that person is told and can object.

Germany's OASIS system held about 367,000 active player bans at the end of 2025, 60,000 more than a year earlier, and handled more than 5.2 billion checks during the year.

What is confirmed and what is not yet known

Ireland's Gambling Regulation Act 2024 provides for a National Gambling Exclusion Register. In February 2026, Citizens Information still described it in the future tense, as a register people "will be able to join". As of 24 September 2026 we found no launch date. Finland's new market, opening on 1 July 2027, will also have a central self-exclusion system covering all licence holders. See our Ireland hub.

What it means for players

Four layers of self-exclusion protection: operator tools, a national register, blocking software, and a bank card block
Self-exclusion works best in layers: operator tools, a national register, blocking software and a bank block.

A national register is the strongest single step, but it only covers licensed operators in that market. GamCare also recommends blocking software and the gambling blocks many banks offer on cards and accounts. Registering with your full legal name helps make sure the match works.
